How to Switch from a Local to an Existing Microsoft Account in Windows 10

Microsoft offers you two ways to sign into your PC. You can either choose a local account where you don't need to use your Microsoft account details and you can either have a password or just login without a password when you turn on your PC. The alternative (and recommended) way is to use your Microsoft account. This offers lots of additional benefits such as keeping you signed into your Microsoft apps and joining your Windows product key to your account in case you need to replace hardware etc.

If you are currently signing in with a local account, follow these simple steps to change to a Microsoft account. You won't lose any data or apps.

1. Click the start button (bottom left of your screen) and click on your name icon on the left of the start menu.

2. Choose "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead".

3. Enter your Microsoft account details. If you don't already have one, you can also create one at this point.

4. Click Next and enter your password when prompted. Then just follow the instructions and you computer will be changed to a use a Microsoft account. Next time you turn on your PC you will be asked to sign in, just enter your Microsoft account password.
